LISTEN: JTF ON NOODS – NYC/NJ HOUSE SPECIAL

Recently, I’ve been working on project for a sizable independent dance label. It involves retelling New York and New Jersey house history in bitesize chunks. You’ll be able to see the results of this research and writing later in the year.

As part of the project, I’ve been immersed in house and garage tracks from the metro area and beyond, joining the dots between leading clubs, DJs, producers and labels. Given the enormous contribution NY and NJ has made to house culture since the 1980s, it has been a fun – if rather epic – project to work on.

Since these cuts were at the forefront of my mind, I decided to dedicate this month’s edition of Join The Future on Noods to NY and NJ house culture. There’s no way you can fully represent the breadth and depth of house history in that part of the United States in an hour, so I just laid down a mix containing killer cuts – some well-known, others less so – from a mix of legendary producers and remixers, ensuring that a few key labels and DJs were also represented. There’s very little chat, for once, because I wanted to showcase the music.

When explaining the show during the intro, I promised to provide more information about the tracks on show. It begins with Roger Sanchez’s own Ego Trip revision of one of his earliest dancefloor classics, Underground Solution’s saucer-eyed deep house treat ‘Luv Dancin’, and ends with E-Smoove’s stomping, singalong gospel-house classic, ‘Shined On Me’.

In between, you’ll find tracks and remixes by David Morales (his lesser-celebrated ‘Red Zone Mix’ of Romi & Jazz’s ‘Love Crime’ and seriously good ‘Riot Mix’ of Liddell Townsell and MTF’s ‘Get With You’), Kerri Chander (his recent re-dub of his early ‘90s production for Dreamer G, ‘I Got That Feelin’), DJ Pierre (yes, I know he’s from Chicago, but his ‘Wild Pitch’ era corresponded with his time living in NYC), Blaze (a tough dub of Sabrynaah Pope’s ‘It Works For Me’), a couple of heavy Mood II Swing dubs, re-edited selections from the Nu Groove catalogue of Burrell brothers classics (Bas Noir and Equation), a properly sub-heavy Jovonn workout (‘This Thing is Jammin (dub mix)’), a Twilo-era Danny Tenaglia remix (Giselle Jackson ‘s ‘Love Commandments’), and a couple of distinctly tribal workouts courtesy of Cevin Fisher and Jerome Sydenham).
