LISTEN: MATT ANNISS, DJ RICHIE & JONATHAN P WATTS IN CONVERSATION

As part of the promotion of my ongoing PhD research into rural and coastal rave culture in East Anglia, I’ll be making a trip to Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk next week. There are various events planned, including a talk on hidden histories and rave culture in the region at the Holloway in Norwich (you can find out more about that here) and a ‘drop-in’ session at PrimeYarc in Market Gates, Great Yarmouth – a community-focused art space run by Original Projects.

That takes place between midday and 2pm on Saturday 12th April 2025. Basically, I’ll be at the gallery distributing fliers to prospective research participants and answering any questions they may have following the launch of an online survey on Monday (7th April). I’ll be providing more details of that survey, how you can take part in that research and why you should in a few days time.

PrimeYarc is a fantastic gallery space based in a former Debenham’s store – one with a terrific track record of putting on exhibitions and events, not only from local artists, but also that in some way connect to Great Yarmouth’s story. I have been to countless events there over the last few years and in March 2023 pitched up there to do a talk, hosted by Jonathan P Watts and also featuring local legend Richie (a former resident at the town’s once-important Tiffany’s night club, a regular at local raves, and later a tour DJ for both the Prodigy and NJoi), as part of a tour promoting the updated and expanded edition of Join The Future: Bleep Techno and the Birth of British Bass Music.

That talk was recorded by Jonathan P Watts and has now been turned into a bonus episode of Join The Future on Noods – an online-only affair. In the 90-minute conversation – which also includes questions from the audience – we discuss the story behind my book, the arguments I outline in them, the acid house and rave-era dance music scene in Great Yarmouth, East Anglian raves, and Richie’s journey as a DJ and producer (the latter in the drum & bass era, alongside friend Jay Hurren as JMJ & Richie).
