On Wednesday 27th August, the latest episode of Join The Future – the eighth of the fifth season, fact fans – aired on Noods Radio. In keeping with the general “end of summer” vibe in the UK, emphasised by recent rain and a general malaise sweeping the country, it mixes darker and moodier tracks with shards of sonic light and moments of genuine musical beauty.
I’ve done a lot of digging through the dustier sections of the record collection of late, and some of those selections made it onto the show. It begins with the woozy, slow-burn ambience of Alter Ego’s ‘Undersea Girl’ from 1994 (given a bit of an edit by yours truly) and ends with another beautiful and beat-free soundscape: ‘Watercolour Guitars’ by The Fireman, AKA Youth and Paul McCartney (yes, that Paul McCartney), which opens 1998 album Rushes.
In between you’ll find the late 90s IDM loveliness of Spacetime Continuum (‘Iford’), multiple nods to Optimo (a track from Jonnie Wilkes’ Naum Gabo project, a frequently overlooked JD Twitch remix of Debukas, and a dash of much-missed Glaswegian band Golden Teacher), some pitched-down dark UK garage (Bodhi’s recently released ‘Dwndwn’), a dash of heavy dub from African Head Charge (‘Full Charge’) and a trio of acid jams (including Lnrdcroy’s epic 2016 jam ‘Ooze City’).
You can listen to the show via the embedded link below, or of course via the Noods Radio website. You’ll find the full tracklisting further down the page.
