After a run of episodes featuring interviews – including extended chats with Steel City-based music journalist Daniel Dylan Wray and Norwegian space disco great Hans-Peter Lindstrom –I thought it was about time I serve up something where the music takes centre stage.
Since the last show aired, Britain has been basking in sunshine – and some genuinely extreme temperatures. My response, as usual, was to channel this into musical daydreaming. Thus, this month’s episode is a kind of soundtrack to lazy afternoons and early evenings spent sat in a forest, shaded by a canopy of verdant trees. And, yes, attending the 2026 edition of Watching Trees may have had something to do with this. I haven’t written a review of this year’s addition, but it was – despite the long shadow cast by the death of Optimo co-founder JD Twitch last autumn – another memorable and mood enhancing triumph.
Anyway, back to the music. For the most part, it is relaxed and picturesque, occasionally with a trippy, dubbed-out or off-kilter bent. There’s genuine sonic beauty – the undulating ambience of MJ Lallo’s ‘Deep Dreams’ (here lightly re-edited by yours truly), the ambient folk bliss of former Optimo Music artist Isa Gordon and Gilb’r – alongside head-nodding, dub-flecked 21st century jazz (Gary Batrz joining His Brother’s Keeper), early 70s British psych-folk (Al Stewart), the Japanese electronic colour of Mr YT, some Balearic bits, a fresh jam from Bristol’s own Ido Plumes, a dash of San Francisco percussion music (Diga Rhythm Band), some deep electro bliss courtesy of Gilbert, and Lexx remixing The Telemores’ recently released ‘No Phones In The Dance’. Oh, and a few nods to my own past D adventures at Watching Trees.
