Astonishingly, Join The Future’s regular show on Noods Radio hit a significant milestone this month: the 50^th episode (and that excludes the six-hour 2020 station takeover that started the story).

For me, as host/DJ, that feels like something to celebrate. When I first proposed the show to replace a prior monthly missive I did on the Bristol-based community station, I wanted it to have a wider remit than things I’d done before. There would be shows dedicated solely to music, of course, but also themed episodes digging into specific sub-genres, labels, producers and periods of time, and conversations with a mix of producers, authors and music historians.

You can access all previous shows via this site’s dedicated audio page, and there’s plenty in there worth your time – a two-part documentary focused on the history of bassline, for example, and conversations with the likes of Kerri Chandler, Ron Trent, Jordan GCZ, Mark Archer and Neil Rushton (the latter recorded at an event in Birmingham), Winston Hazel (at the fantastic We Out Here festival), DIY’s Harry Harrison, hardcore historian Holly Dicker and many more.

At this point, I’d like to thank each and every one of you who has tuned in over the years, whether to the live broadcast or via the archive. That connection with listeners – the feeling that you are communicating directly with them through words and music – is what makes radio such a special medium. I’ve been broadcasting on local and internet radio stations for the best part of 30 years now, stretching right back to my student days in Bournemouth. I never tire of it and am looking forward to notching up another 50 episodes (at least) of Join The Future in the years ahead.

Well, there’s a subtle (and at times not so subtle) acid theme across the show, with twisted TB-303 tweakery appearing in everything from Peaking Lights opiate Baleaaric dub of Portuguese act Sensible Soccers and the sub-heavy post-bleep weight of Higher Intelligence Agency, to the quirky electrofunk of DMX Krew (an inspired cover of the Police’s mutant disco delight ‘Voices Inside My Head’), the raw dancefloor jack of Stones Taro and the formative Italian progressive house of Simon Longo.

There’s plenty of TB-303-free excellence too; a sublime lovers rock style revision of soul don Darondo by Japanese producer KH, Todd Terje’s inspired dub of Paul Simon’s ‘Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes’, the soulful house bliss of Sean McCabe, Colonel Red and Groove Assassin covering an R&B classic, and a fantastic Young Marco remix of HMNY from the mid 2010s. Oh, and a very Balearic re-edit by yours truly that recently appeared on Coyote’s Magic Wand imprint.
