On Wednesday 23rd March 2022, Noods Radio in Bristol broadcast the second and final instalment of our two-part audio documentary on bassline history (you can find the first part here). This episode – the third of the second series of Join The Future on Noods – is now available to stream on demand. You can listen to it via the embedded audio player below, or head directly to the show on the Noods Radio Mixcloud channel.

Whereas part one of the documentary focused on the ‘bassline house’ years of the late ’90s and early 2000s, this episode looks at everything that’s happened since, charting bassline’s struggles with the authorities, the impact of ‘4×4 bassline’ on the sound’s evolution and popularity, the breakthrough chart hits of T2 and others, and the way the sound and scene has now become a key part of the cultural identity of cities such as Bradford, Birmingham, Sheffield and Leeds. It features contributions from Niche resident Shaun Banger Scott, Flava D, Local Action artist (and NTS host) Finn, and the Guardian’s Lanre Bakare, who grew up in Bradford during bassline’s rise.

This episode, like its’ predecessor, ties in to Matt Anniss’s ‘Brief History of Bassline’ essay for DJ magazine, which you can read online here. Matt’s earlier article on T2’s ‘Heartbroken’ can also be read on the DJ Mag website. You can find all episodes of Join The Future on Noods via the links on our Audio page, and via our resident profile on the Noods website.
